Vascular access for hemodialysis like arteriovenous fistula requires needle insertion which is a painful procedure. It may lead to anxiety among patients and even rejection of the treatment. Application of topical vapocoolant spray and cold are two methods to reduce pain during needling. Primary objective is to compare the effectiveness between vapocoolant spray and cold applications in reducing pain during arteriovenous fistula needling among patients undergoing haemodialysis. A quantitative approach cross over design was adopted for the present study. A Structured questionnaire was developed to collect the baseline data. Numerical pain rating scale was used to measure the pain after the arteriovenous fistula needling. The vapocoolant spray was applied 60 sec prior and cold application was applied 5 min prior to arteriovenous fistula needling. Post intervention pain scores were assessed using numerical pain rating scale. The data obtained were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The data gathered were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that mean pain score after the vapocoolant (5.722) was less than cold application (6.111) and routine care (7.778). The findings of the present study reveals that the vapocoolant spray and cold application is more effective in reducing pain when compare to the routine care.
